Wizards & Warriors X: The Fortress of Fear is one of those classic Game Boy adventures that feels like it was designed to drain your batteries—in the best way. You play as a wizard-warrior hybrid (because why choose?), hacking through skeletons and casting spells in this eerie, labyrinthine fortress. The controls are simple—jump, slash, and occasionally zap something with magic—but don’t let that fool you. Some of those platforming sections? Brutal.
What I love is how the game keeps throwing weird little surprises at you. One minute you’re fighting floating eyeballs, the next you’re dodging spike traps while a ghost chases you. And the music? That tinny, haunting Game Boy soundtrack sticks with you. It’s not the deepest RPG out there, but there’s something satisfying about clearing a room of monsters and finding a hidden chest tucked behind a fake wall.
If you’re into retro action-platformers with a dash of fantasy nonsense, this one’s a solid time. Just don’t blame me when you get stuck on that one jump near the third boss.
