Wizardry Gaiden 2 is one of those old-school dungeon crawlers that doesn’t hold your hand—you’re thrown straight into a grid-based labyrinth with a party of adventurers, and good luck figuring out which way is up at first. The Game Boy’s tiny screen makes it even more claustrophobic, but there’s something weirdly satisfying about mapping out each floor on graph paper like it’s 1985.
You start by rolling stats for your party (good luck getting a decent samurai on the first try), then dive into the Ancient Emperor’s cursed dungeon. Combat’s turn-based, and if you’re not careful, a random encounter with some bats can wipe you out before you even find the first staircase down. The Japanese text adds an extra layer of mystery if you’re not fluent, but the menus are just familiar enough from other Wizardry games to stumble through.
It’s brutal, grindy, and definitely not for everyone—but if you miss the days when RPGs didn’t care about your feelings, this one’s a weird little time capsule.
