WinBack was way ahead of its time when it hit the N64—basically the granddad of cover shooters before Gears of War made it cool. You play as this counter-terrorism agent sneaking through bases, pressing against walls to peek around corners (which felt revolutionary back then). The controls are a little clunky by today’s standards, but there’s something satisfying about the slow, methodical shootouts where one wrong move gets you shredded.
First mission drops you straight into a hostage situation with just a pistol and some awkward rolling mechanics. You’ll either love the janky charm or rage-quit after the third time getting shot while trying to line up a shot. Still, nailing a perfect flank on a room full of enemies feels awesome. Just don’t expect Call of Duty pacing—this is more about tension than run-and-gun.
Fun fact: The voice acting is hilariously stiff, like they recorded it in someone’s basement. But that’s part of the nostalgia at this point.
