I first played WinBack: Covert Operations after it came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1999. It was developed by Koei, a company more known for its historical strategy games, so this was a noticeable shift for them. On a console filled with bright platformers and fantasy adventures, WinBack stood out for trying to bring a more straightforward, tactical shooter feel to the system. It was part of that wave of late 90s games experimenting with 3D action, and it had a certain rough charm because of it.

You control Jean-Luc Cougar, an operative for a secret agency called S.C.A.T. Your mission is to stop a terrorist group that has seized control of a nuclear satellite laser. The gameplay is built around taking cover. You press a button to snap behind walls or crates, then lean out to aim and fire at enemies. The levels are broken into distinct rooms or areas that you clear methodically. You also solve simple puzzles, like finding keycards to open doors or rerouting power systems. The pace is deliberate; you can't just run and gun. It can be difficult, as enemies hit hard and your health doesn't regenerate. Playing it feels like a careful, step by step process of securing each new space.
