Wetrix came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, developed by a studio called Zed Two. It was a puzzle game that felt different from most things on the system at the time, which was full of 3D platformers and racing games. You didn't control a character; you manipulated the game space itself.

You control a cursor over a floating, deformable landscape. Your main job is to catch falling water droplets and keep them from spilling off the edges. You use tools to dig depressions to create lakes, or to build up walls of earth to contain the water. The challenge escalates as bombs fall to blast holes in your terrain, and ice blocks freeze the water solid, changing how it flows. The game starts calmly but the pace quickens, demanding faster decisions as the board gets more chaotic. It feels like a constant, engaging fight against entropy.
