About Wayne Gretzky's 3d Hockey '98
Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey '98 came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1997, a Midway Games release that arrived when the console was hitting its stride. It was part of that wave of early 3D sports titles trying to capture the speed and physicality of the real thing on a new generation of hardware.
You control a team of hockey players, skating up and down the rink with the goal of scoring more points than your opponent. The game's signature mechanics include big, exaggerated checks that send players flying into the glass and a special turbo mode that lets you temporarily skate faster and shoot harder. You can also pull off one timers and dekes to get around defenders. The pacing is fast and arcade-like, with a difficulty that ramps up noticeably against the computer. It feels like a chaotic, physical scramble where a lucky bounce can change everything in an instant.
