Wave Race came out for the Game Boy in 1992, developed by Nintendo EAD. It was one of those early titles that tried to bring a sense of motion and speed to the handheld's small screen, a different kind of challenge compared to the many puzzle and platform games available at the time.

You control a jet ski racer, navigating through a series of winding courses marked by buoys. The main objective is straightforward: finish each race in first place. The signature mechanics involve steering through the buoy gates correctly; hitting a red buoy slows you down, while missing a gate entirely costs precious time. The water itself has a slight choppiness to it, forcing you to adjust your line and sometimes even catch a small jump off a wave. The races are short but demanding, with the computer opponents providing a consistent challenge. It feels like a quick, focused test of your reflexes and precision on the water.
