Vigilante 8 is basically Twisted Metal’s funkier, groovier cousin—set in a wild ‘70s alternate universe where every car is armed to the teeth. You pick a ride (my go-to was the school bus with a flamethrower, because why not?) and blast through diners, oil rigs, and desert highways while the soundtrack pumps out crunchy guitar riffs.
What makes it stand out is how the arenas actually crumble around you—knock over a gas station and watch the whole thing explode, taking half the enemy team with it. The weapons are ridiculous in the best way, from homing missiles to literal UFO tractor beams. It’s pure chaos, but there’s a weirdly satisfying rhythm to dodging attacks and timing your special moves.
If you ever played couch co-op back in the day, you know the real magic is in the 4-player mode where friendships temporarily dissolve over who stole the last health pickup. Still holds up as one of the N64’s most underrated demolition derbies.
