About Videomation
Videomation came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, published by The Software Toolworks. In an era dominated by platformers and action games, it stood out as a quiet, creative tool, letting you make your own animations right on the TV.
You control a simple cursor, using the NES controller to draw with a variety of tools and stamps. The main goal is to create frame-by-frame animations, building up a sequence from individual drawings. You work screen by screen, placing shapes and lines, then use the animation feature to flip between frames and see your drawing come to life. A notable part of the process was the ability to record your final creation onto a VCR tape for playback later. The pacing is entirely your own, with no time pressure or enemies to fight, making it a very relaxed experience. It feels like having a small, personal animation studio tucked inside your game console.
