About Venice Beach Volleyball
Venice Beach Volleyball came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System, though I don't recall who made it. It was one of those sports games that tried to capture a specific vibe, the kind you'd find tucked between more famous titles in a rental store.
You control a pair of volleyball players on the beach, moving them as a unit to serve, bump, set, and spike the ball. The main goal is to outscore the other team in a match, which you can set to be a single set or a best-of-three. Two mechanics stand out: the ability to choose between normal scoring, where you must be serving to earn a point, and rally scoring, where every play can score. You also pick from teams with different stats, which affects how high they jump or how fast they move. The game moves at a steady pace, and the computer opponent can be surprisingly persistent on higher difficulties. It feels like a straightforward, no-frills attempt to bring a day at the beach onto the NES.
