About Ultraman Club - Kaijuu Dai Kessen!! (japan)
Ultraman Club: Kaijuu Dai Kessen!! came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, published by Bandai. It was part of that wave of late NES games based on popular Japanese properties, a side-scrolling action title that let you step into the suit of the famous hero.
You control Ultraman, moving screen by screen through city and cavern stages. Your main goal is to defeat the giant monsters, or kaiju, that appear. You have a standard beam attack for smaller enemies, but the signature mechanic is the grappling system; when you get close to a large monster, you enter a wrestling-style mini-game where you must rapidly press buttons to overpower it. Another key feature is the color-coded energy meter, which depletes as you attack and must be managed carefully. The pacing is deliberate, with a focus on these one-on-one monster battles rather than fast running and gunning. It feels like a methodical test of endurance, where a single mistake against a boss can cost you the match.
