Ultima: Runes of Virtue on Game Boy is one of those old-school RPGs that feels like a tiny, dense adventure packed into a cartridge. You start off as the Avatar—yep, the same one from the main Ultima games—but this time, you're on a mission to track down these missing runes before the Black Knight messes everything up.
It’s got that classic top-down view, and the dungeons are surprisingly intricate for a Game Boy title. At first, I kept getting turned around in the maze-like corridors, but once you get the hang of it, there’s something satisfying about mapping them out in your head (or, let’s be real, on actual graph paper). Combat’s simple but keeps you on your toes—sword swings feel weighty, and magic adds just enough variety without being overwhelming.
What really stuck with me were the puzzles. Some are straightforward, but others make you stop and think, especially when you’re juggling keys, switches, and hidden passages. And yeah, the Black Knight’s a proper villain—every time you think you’ve got him cornered, he pulls some new trick.
If you’re into retro RPGs, this one’s a solid pick—just don’t expect it to hold your hand.
