About Ultima - Ushinawareta Runes (japan)
Ultima: Ushinawareta Runes came out for the Game Boy in 1993, developed by Pony Canyon. It was part of that wave of early 90s handheld RPGs, a time when developers were figuring out how to fit a big adventure onto a small screen. This particular game is a Japan only release, a condensed version of the Ultima world built for on the go play.
You control a hero exploring the land of Sosaria from a top down perspective, moving screen by screen. Your main goal is to recover the lost runes and stop the evil Mondain. You talk to townsfolk for clues, fight monsters in turn based combat using swords and bows, and delve into dungeons filled with traps and treasure. The game moves at a deliberate pace, and some of the dungeon navigation can be quite challenging. Playing it feels like slowly piecing together a large, intricate puzzle.
