Ultima: Ushinawareta Runes II is one of those weird little Game Boy RPGs that flew under the radar—probably because it never left Japan. It's a stripped-down Ultima experience, but there's something charming about its tiny sprites and condensed overworld. You start off picking between three classes (fighter, mage, thief), and yeah, the thief is basically useless at first—stick with fighter unless you love pain.
The translation barrier makes it a bit of a puzzle, but if you've played any old-school Ultima, you'll recognize the usual "talk to everyone, poke at everything" gameplay. The dungeons are surprisingly brutal for a Game Boy title, with random encounters that'll wreck you if you're not careful. It's rough around the edges, but there's a weirdly satisfying grind to it if you're into that kind of thing.
Honestly, it's more of a curiosity than a must-play, but if you dig obscure JRPGs or Ultima's weird spin-offs, it's worth a look. Just don't expect anything close to Ultima IV.
