Ufouria came out for the NES in 1991, developed by Sunsoft. It was part of that wave of late-era platformers that felt a bit more experimental, a little less bound by the conventions of the earlier part of the decade. You don't play as a single hero, but instead control a group of four amnesiac friends, each a different species, who have fallen into a strange crater.

You start as Bop-Louie, exploring the world screen by screen to find your three lost companions. Each character you rescue, like Freeon-Leeon or Gil, has a unique ability; one can walk on ice and swim, another can dive underwater. This opens up new paths in the sprawling map, encouraging backtracking. Your main goal is to eventually collect keys to unlock the Temple Gate. The pacing is methodical, focused on exploration over pure action, and the difficulty comes from learning the map and using the right character for each obstacle. It feels like slowly piecing together a forgotten world with a group of friends.
