About U-force Test
U-Force Test was a 1990 release for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Broderbund. It was created specifically for the U-Force controller accessory, a unique peripheral that attempted to replace the standard gamepad with an infrared sensor array you controlled with hand gestures. This placed it among a small group of NES titles that experimented with alternative control schemes, a niche but interesting part of the console's history.
In the game, you control a cursor on the screen, navigating through a series of simple minigames and calibration tests. Your main objective is to complete these tests, which involve tasks like popping balloons, deflecting objects, and tracing patterns, all without touching a physical controller. The signature mechanics are entirely built around the U-Force unit; you move your hands over the sensor pad to direct the cursor, make a pushing motion to "press" buttons, and sometimes clap to trigger actions. The pacing is methodical, focused on calibration, and the difficulty often comes from the controller's imprecise and laggy response rather than the game design itself. Playing it feels like a technical demonstration, a brief and often frustrating glimpse into a control method that never quite caught on.
