Okay, so TwinBee 3 is one of those classic NES shooters that never made it outside Japan—which is a shame, because it’s actually way more polished than the first two. You’re still piloting that little pastel-colored ship, dodging bullets and grabbing power-ups (smacking those floating bells never gets old), but this one throws in some wild level designs. One minute you’re blasting through clouds, the next you’re in some trippy underground cavern with bouncing enemies everywhere.
The bosses are ridiculous in the best way—giant floating heads, transforming robots, the usual Konami weirdness. And yeah, it’s tough as nails if you play it straight, but there’s a two-player mode where you and a buddy can just go nuts with the bell upgrades. Emulator save states help if you’re not into the whole "lose all your power-ups on death" thing.
It’s got that perfect mix of cute and chaotic that makes old-school shooters so addictive.
