About Turrican (usa, Europe)
I first played Turrican on the Game Boy back in 1990, a time when portable games were mostly simple affairs. This one was developed by Rainbow Arts, and it felt like a more ambitious attempt to bring a console-style action game to the small screen. It was part of that wave of games trying to prove the handheld could handle complex, scrolling adventures.
You control a soldier in a powered suit, moving through large, interconnected levels filled with alien creatures and environmental hazards. Your main goal is simply to survive and push forward, destroying everything in your path. Your suit gives you a few key tools: a standard blaster that can be charged for a wider shot, and a morph ball ability that lets you roll into tight spaces to avoid damage or access hidden areas. The pacing is relentless, with enemies swarming from all directions, and the difficulty can be punishing. Navigating the multi-directional stages, where you can scroll up and down as well as left and right, requires constant attention. It feels like a tense, chaotic scramble where every new screen could be your last.
