Trog was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990 by Acclaim Entertainment. It arrived late in the NES lifecycle, a time when many developers were pushing the hardware with more complex games. This one stood out with its colorful, cartoonish style, a departure from the more common fantasy or sci-fi themes of the era.

You control one of two small dinosaurs, Spike or Bloop, trying to collect all the eggs on a single screen while being chased by the caveman Trog. The main objective is simply to gather every egg before Trog can catch you, which sends you scrambling across the enclosed playfield. Signature mechanics include using power-ups found in the environment; a pineapple transforms your dinosaur into a Tyrannosaurus rex that can stomp Trog flat, while other items provide temporary speed or invincibility. The game is played screen by screen across numerous levels, and the pacing is frantic as Trog's pursuit is relentless, often using his own tools like a pogo stick to close distances quickly. It feels like a tense game of tag where a single mistake can end your run.
