About Toukon Road - Brave Spirits (j)
I picked up Toukon Road: Brave Spirits on the Nintendo 64 back in 1998, a release from Hudson Soft. It was a time when the N64 library was full of experiments, and this was one of the more niche Japanese wrestling titles that never made it overseas. You control a created wrestler, starting from the very bottom of the professional wrestling circuit.
Your goal is to climb the ranks by winning matches and completing training minigames to build up your fighter's stats. The core loop involves moving your wrestler on a map screen from town to town, accepting fights, and managing your condition. Signature mechanics include a momentum-based grappling system where you chain moves together, and a spirit gauge that powers up your special attacks when filled. The pacing is methodical; you spend as much time preparing for a bout as you do in the ring itself. It feels like a gritty, hands-on simulation of the grueling daily life of an aspiring pro wrestler.
