About Totally Rad
Totally Rad came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, published by Jaleco. It was part of that wave of late NES action platformers that tried to stand out with a specific style, in this case a bright, cartoonish look.
You control a teenager named Jake who uses magic to fight monsters. The main goal is to rescue your friend from an evil wizard. You move through levels screen by screen, using a short range sword attack and a limited supply of magic spells for longer range. Defeating enemies and breaking objects gives you gems to purchase spell upgrades between stages. The game has a brisk pace but the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, especially during boss fights. Playing it feels like a constant scramble to manage your resources while pushing forward.
