Totally Rad is this gloriously cheesy NES action-platformer that feels like someone bottled 1988 and turned it into a video game. You play as Jake, a dude with a mullet and a skateboard who punches robots and throws boomerangs (because why not?) to rescue his girlfriend from some evil wizard named Edogy. The first level alone has palm trees, neon colors, and a soundtrack that sounds like a rejected Van Halen demo tape.
It’s janky in that classic NES way—hit detection is kinda wonky, and some jumps feel like they’re designed to make you swear—but there’s something weirdly charming about how hard it leans into the era’s vibe. Also, Jake gets magic powers later, which is rad in the most literal sense. If you dig weird retro games with personality, this one’s a trip.
