Total Carnage on the Game Boy is one of those classic top-down shooters where you just go nuts blasting everything in sight. You start off with this dinky little gun, but within minutes you're picking up flamethrowers, spread shots, and other ridiculous weapons that turn the screen into pure chaos. The levels throw waves of enemies at you—some dumb, some annoyingly smart—and you're constantly scrambling for health packs while dodging bullets.
It's got that old-school arcade feel where you die a lot at first, but once you get the rhythm down, you start pulling off these ridiculous last-second dodges that feel amazing. The controls are tight for a Game Boy game, though the tiny screen can make it hard to see everything coming at you. If you're into retro shooters that don't hold your hand, this one's a blast (literally).
