About Total Carnage
I first played Total Carnage on my Game Boy in 1994. It was developed by Beam Software, a company that put out a number of titles for the handheld during that period. The game arrived when the Game Boy library was full of action and puzzle games, and this one fit right in with its top-down perspective and straightforward run-and-gun premise.
You control a lone commando fighting through waves of enemies across various desert and military-themed stages. Your main goal is simply to survive each screen, clearing out all hostile forces before you can proceed to the next area. The core mechanics involve constant movement and shooting; you can pick up different weapon power-ups like spread shots and flamethrowers to increase your firepower. The pacing is relentless, with enemies spawning quickly from all sides, and the difficulty is unforgiving, demanding quick reflexes and careful positioning. Playing it feels like a tense, chaotic scramble where one wrong move ends your run abruptly.
