About Top Ranking Tennis
Top Ranking Tennis came out for the Game Boy in 1993, developed by TOSE and published by Tonkin House. It was one of the portable system's early attempts at a serious sports simulation, arriving before the more famous Mario Tennis titles defined the genre on Nintendo handhelds. You get a straightforward tennis game that fits in your pocket, a concept that felt novel at the time even with the hardware's limitations.
You control a single tennis player from a side view, moving them back and forth along the baseline to return the ball. The main goal is to win matches by outscoring a series of computer opponents in standard tennis rules. Signature mechanics include a risk-reward system where holding the button longer charges a more powerful, precise shot, and a strategic element where you must anticipate your opponent's returns based on their court position. The game moves at a brisk pace, and the difficulty escalates noticeably as you progress through the ranks, demanding quick reflexes and careful shot placement. It feels satisfying to finally nail a well-timed charged shot down the line for a winner.
