About Top Gun (japan)
Top Gun on the NES came out in 1987 from Konami. It was one of many movie tie-ins from that period, and it tried to capture the feeling of jet combat on a system not really built for it. You got a cartridge, popped it in, and hoped your reflexes were up to the task.
You control Maverick, piloting an F-14 Tomcat through six distinct missions. Your main job is to survive dogfights, bomb ground targets, and most famously, land your plane on an aircraft carrier. The two things everyone remembers are the in-air refueling, which required precise alignment with a tanker plane, and the carrier landing sequence, a notoriously difficult test of patience and control. The game moves at a fast clip, and the difficulty spikes sharply, especially during those landing phases. It feels like a constant battle against the controls and the clock, a tense experience where success is a genuine relief.
