About Top Gun
Top Gun came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, published by Konami. It was part of that wave of games based on popular movies, trying to capture the feeling of flying a fighter jet on the 8-bit hardware. You got to be a naval aviator, which was a pretty common fantasy back then.
In the game, you control an F-14 Tomcat from a behind-the-jet perspective. Your main goal is to complete missions, which involve taking off from an aircraft carrier, flying through enemy airspace, and landing again. The signature mechanics are the dogfighting, where you have to line up enemy jets in your targeting reticle to lock on and fire missiles, and the notoriously difficult refueling and landing sequences that require precise throttle and altitude control. The pacing is intense during combat but becomes methodical and tense when you have to dock with a tanker or line up with the carrier. It feels like a constant battle between the thrill of high-speed combat and the punishing precision of the flight simulator elements.
