About Top Gear Overdrive
Top Gear Overdrive came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, published by Kemco. It was part of that wave of arcade style racing games on the console, sitting alongside more serious simulations. You got a selection of cars and a bunch of tracks, and the goal was straightforward: win races.
You control one of several different cars, each with their own handling, and race on circuits that loop back on themselves. The main objective is to finish first in a series of cups, earning prize money to buy better vehicles or upgrades. Signature mechanics include the weapon pickups scattered on the track, which let you fire missiles or drop oil slicks at your rivals, and the persistent damage your car accumulates during a race, affecting its top speed and handling. The pacing is fast, and the computer opponents are aggressive, making for a decent challenge. It feels like a chaotic, noisy battle on wheels where a single mistake can cost you the lead.
