About Tip Off (europe)
Tip Off came out for the Game Boy in 1990, published by Infogrames in Europe. It was part of that early wave of handheld sports games, trying to capture a fast paced sport on a small, monochrome screen. You don't see many basketball games from that period, so it always stood out to me for trying something different with the hardware.
You control a single basketball player on a condensed court, viewed from above. The main goal is to outscore the opposing team within the time limit. Your player automatically follows the ball, so the core gameplay is about positioning and timing your actions. You press a button to jump for a shot or a rebound, and you pass the ball to your computer controlled teammates when they are open. The game moves quickly, and the controls can feel a bit slippery, making it challenging to consistently get a clean shot off. It feels like a frantic scramble for possession more than a methodical simulation.
