About Three Stooges
I remember picking up The Three Stooges for the NES back in 1989. It was developed by Beam Software and published by Activision, a game that tried to capture the slapstick spirit of the comedy trio during a time when movie and cartoon licenses were common on the console. It stood out simply because it was one of the few games where you could play as Moe, Larry, and Curly, navigating through levels that felt like interactive episodes from their old shorts.
You control the Stooges one at a time, switching between them to solve puzzles and progress through various themed stages. The main goal is to earn money for the orphanage by completing odd jobs, which involves a lot of running from left to right, avoiding enemies, and collecting items. Signature mechanics include a poking and slapping combat system for dealing with nuisances, and timing-based mini-games that pop up frequently, like pie throwing or surgery gags. The pacing is frantic, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, with precise jumps and instant failures in the mini-games leading to quick restarts. Playing it feels like a chaotic race against the clock, where the humor comes from the sheer absurdity of the situations rather than any deep strategy.
