Okay, so The Legend of Zelda: Zelda’s Birthday is this weird little N64 ROM hack that somehow turns Hyrule into one big birthday party for Zelda—except, of course, Ganon ruins everything. You still get the classic Zelda dungeon crawling and puzzle-solving, but now there’s confetti bombs and cake-themed heart containers. The graphics are janky in that charming N64 way, and some of the side quests are actually hilarious (one involves chasing down a runaway Cucco with a party hat).
It’s not perfect—some of the new items feel a little gimmicky, and the framerate chugs in busier areas—but if you’ve played Ocarina of Time to death and want something silly and fresh, it’s a surprisingly fun way to kill a weekend. Just don’t expect Majora’s Mask levels of depth.
