About The Last Starfighter
The Last Starfighter came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, published by Atari, Inc. It was part of that wave of movie tie-ins on the NES, though it felt more like a direct port of an earlier computer game than something built from the ground up for the console. You could find it on shelves alongside other sci-fi titles, but it never really stood out from the pack.
You pilot a small ship from a top-down perspective, navigating through narrow canyons and over enemy fortresses. The main goal is to destroy a set of dreadnoughts, which requires you to first fly over their surface to lower their shields. Signature mechanics include dodging enemy fire while carefully managing your altitude to avoid crashing into obstacles; the flat graphics make judging distances tricky. The game moves at a fast clip and the difficulty spikes quickly, demanding precise control. It feels like a constant struggle against the controls and the perspective more than the enemies themselves.
