About Tetris 2 (europe)
I picked up Tetris 2 for the Game Boy around 1993, a release from Nintendo that followed the original puzzle phenomenon. It arrived during a time when the handheld was flooded with puzzle games, each trying to capture that same simple magic. This one took a different path, moving away from the pure line clearing everyone knew.
You still control the falling tetrominoes, but the goal is to match blocks by color, not to complete rows. The main objective is to clear all the flashing blocks from the bottom of the screen before they stack up to the top. Two mechanics define the play: you drop colored blocks onto a pre built structure, and matching three or more of the same color makes them vanish. The game also introduces a new type of block, the bomb block, which can clear a small cluster when matched. The pacing is deliberate, more about careful placement than speed, though the difficulty steadily increases as the screen fills with more complex patterns. It feels like a slower, more thoughtful kind of puzzle, where you are dismantling a wall piece by piece instead of racing against a rising tide.
