About Tensai Bakabon
I picked up Tensai Bakabon for the Game Boy back in 1990, a time when portable gaming was just getting started. It was published by Namco, and it was based on a Japanese manga series that was completely unknown to me. The game felt like a lot of other platformers from that era, but it had its own strange personality right from the start.
You control Bakabon, a boy with a big round head, navigating through side scrolling stages. The main goal is to rescue your father, who has been kidnapped. You jump on platforms, avoid enemies, and collect items like bells that give you points. A key mechanic is finding hidden doors that warp you to different parts of the level, which can either help you progress or send you back to the beginning if you choose wrong. The game is quite difficult, with precise jumps required and enemies that respawn quickly. Playing it feels like a constant, slightly chaotic scramble to figure out the right path before your lives run out.
