You control a little green alligator named Gator. Your main goal is to rescue your friend, a monkey, who has been kidnapped. The game plays out screen by screen; you move to the edge of one screen, and it flips to the next. Your primary attack is a tail whip, which you use to defeat the various enemies that crawl and fly around. You also collect fruit for points, and there are hidden items to find if you hit certain blocks. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty can be surprisingly sharp in later stages, demanding careful movement.
