I remember picking up T&C Surf Designs: Wood & Water Rage for the NES back in 1988. It was a Konami release that tried something different on a system filled with platformers and shooters. The game stood out simply because it combined two activities, surfing and skateboarding, which you didn't see together often in that era.

You control a surfer or skater, switching between two distinct sidescrolling modes. On the water, you ride waves, perform tricks for points, and avoid hazards like rocks and sharks. On land, you skate through city and backyard courses, grinding on pipes and jumping over gaps. The main goal is to achieve a high score in each stage, though there is also a two-player versus mode. The skateboarding feels a bit stiff, requiring precise timing for ollies and grinds, while the surfing is more fluid but still dangerous. It is not an easy game; the collision detection can be unforgiving, and the stages demand quick reflexes. Playing it feels like a constant battle between pulling off a cool trick and crashing into the next obstacle.
