Swords and Serpents came out in 1990 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, published by Interplay Entertainment. It was part of that wave of first-person dungeon crawlers on the NES, games that tried to bring a more complex, PC-style RPG experience to the console. You don't see many games like it on the system, which always made it stand out to me.

You control a party of four adventurers, moving them together through a first-person perspective, screen by screen. The main goal is to delve deep into a massive labyrinth, fighting monsters and gathering the keys needed to ultimately defeat the dragon at the bottom. Key mechanics include managing your entire party's health, magic, and food supplies while navigating maze-like corridors that all look very similar. The game is deliberately slow and methodical; you have to map everything out on graph paper to avoid getting completely lost. It feels like a tense, logistical puzzle as much as a straightforward adventure.
