Super Momotarou Dentetsu on Game Boy is basically Monopoly but with way more personality—and way more trains. You roll dice, buy up properties, and try to bankrupt your opponents, except here you’re also dealing with little pixelated demons and occasionally getting bailed out by Momotarou’s animal pals. The first time I played, I got way too excited about buying a station and immediately went broke. Classic.
The board changes every game, so you can’t just memorize the best spots, and the tiny sprites have this weirdly charming energy—like when your character does a little dance after landing on a lucky space. It’s simple, sure, but there’s something about the way the game balances dumb luck and sneaky strategy that makes it hard to put down. If you’ve got a soft spot for retro board games with a Japanese twist, this one’s a no-brainer.
