Super Hunchback is one of those weird little Game Boy gems that somehow turns a tragic novel into a side-scrolling platformer. You play as Quasimodo, swinging around Notre Dame with your whip (yeah, they gave him a whip) and rescuing Esmeralda from guards and gargoyles. The controls take a second to get used to—your jumps feel heavy, but once you get the rhythm, swinging across gaps feels oddly satisfying.
It’s got that classic early Game Boy vibe—simple but surprisingly tough, with these eerie chiptune renditions of church music in the background. I kept getting stuck on the spike traps until I realized you can actually climb some of the chains. Not gonna lie, the hit detection can be janky, but there’s something charming about its clunky ambition. If you’re into obscure retro platformers, this one’s a fun oddity.
