Super Battletank: War on Game Boy is exactly what it sounds like—you’re in a tank, and everything else is trying to kill you. The controls take a second to get used to (left and right rotate, up and down move forward/back), but once it clicks, you’re rolling through pixelated warzones blasting enemy turrets and dodging return fire.
The missions start simple—just survive—but later levels throw mines, helicopters, and terrain that forces you to actually think before charging in. I remember getting stuck on one night mission where the screen was pitch black except for muzzle flashes. Had to creep forward inch by inch like some kind of terrified metal turtle.
It’s got that classic Game Boy vibe where everything’s beige and green, explosions are tiny squares, and the soundtrack is just a relentless beeping march. Not gonna lie, it’s janky by modern standards, but there’s something weirdly satisfying about outmaneuvering a whole army with a d-pad and two buttons.
If you miss the days when games didn’t hold your hand, this one’s a solid time capsule.
