Sukeban Deka 3 came out in 1991 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed and published by Toei Animation. It was part of that wave of late NES titles based on anime properties, a time when developers were still squeezing new concepts out of the aging hardware. You don't see many people talking about it now, which is a shame because it has a specific kind of charm.

You play as Saki Asamiya, a high school student who fights with a yo-yo. The game is a side-scrolling action platformer where you move through stages screen by screen, clearing out groups of delinquents. Your main goal is to rescue your kidnapped friend, which involves navigating school corridors and city streets. Your yo-yo is your primary weapon; you can swing it to attack enemies directly or use it to grab onto overhead pipes and ledges to swing across gaps. You also collect items that restore your health or grant temporary invincibility. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, with enemies swarming you from all directions. Playing it feels like a brisk, chaotic brawl where you're constantly reacting.
