About Street Racer
Ubisoft released Street Racer for the Game Boy in 1994, a time when portable racing games were often simplified versions of their console counterparts. This one tried to pack a surprising amount of content onto the small cartridge, offering a few different modes beyond a standard race. It existed in that middle period for the handheld, after the initial launch titles but before the more ambitious Color games arrived.
You control a small, top down car on tracks that scroll vertically. The main goal is straightforward: finish first against a handful of computer opponents. The game uses a split screen, with your view on top and a rival's below, which creates a constant sense of competition. You can pick up power ups that appear on the track, like speed boosts or oil slicks to hinder the other cars. The controls are responsive but the difficulty ramps up quickly, with later courses requiring precise turns to avoid walls and rivals. It feels like a quick, challenging arcade experience squeezed into your pocket.
