I first played Star Wars: Rogue Squadron on the Nintendo 64 back in 1998. It was developed by Factor 5, a studio that really pushed the hardware. At a time when many N64 games were focused on platformers and adventures, this one was a straight flight combat sim set in the Star Wars universe. It felt like a direct and polished experience compared to some of the more experimental titles on the system.

You pilot various Rebel Alliance starfighters, like the X-wing and Y-wing, across a series of missions. Your main goal is to complete specific objectives, which usually involve destroying Imperial ground targets or winning large-scale space battles. The signature mechanics are managing your ship's shield and weapon energy by diverting power, performing precise bombing runs on heavily armored walkers, and finding hidden bonus vehicles by achieving gold medals on stages. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can be sharp, especially when you are swarmed by TIE fighters while trying to hit a vulnerable spot on a Star Destroyer. It feels like you are genuinely responsible for a small, powerful ship in a very large and dangerous war.
