Star Wars: Rogue Squadron on N64 is one of those rare licensed games that actually nails the feeling of being in an X-Wing cockpit. You start off blasting TIE fighters over Mos Eisley, and within minutes you're diving through canyons, dodging turbolaser fire, and pulling off ridiculous maneuvers that'd make Wedge Antilles proud.
The controls take a second to click—you'll probably crash into a sand dune your first try—but once they do, weaving between AT-ST legs or threading shots through tight spaces feels amazing. The A-Wing handles like a dream if you're into speed, though I always came back to the X-Wing for that classic "lock S-foils in attack position" moment.
Graphics were mind-blowing for 1998, and honestly? They still hold up in that chunky N64 way. Explosions leave smoke trails, sunlight glints off your canopy, and yeah, the draw distance is about three feet, but who cares when you're barrel-rolling through a Star Destroyer's laser barrage?
This is the game that made me realize I'd never actually be a Rebel pilot, but damn if it didn't come close.
