Star Fox 64 came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1997, developed and published by Nintendo. It was one of the defining games for the system, a 3D rail shooter that felt like a big step up from the Super Nintendo original. You control Fox McCloud, piloting an Arwing fighter through a series of missions to stop Andross. The game is structured with branching paths; your performance in one level determines which stage you play next. Key mechanics include all-range mode, where you freely fly in an arena to fight bosses, and the ability to perform a barrel roll to deflect enemy fire. You also have team members who communicate with you constantly, and you can order them to form up or attack. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can spike on some of the alternate routes. It feels immediate and responsive, like you are really in the cockpit.
