About Square No Tom Sawyer (japan)
Square No Tom Sawyer came out in 1989 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed and published by Square. It was part of that wave of late 80s NES games that tried different things with the RPG formula, putting a familiar literary character into a top-down adventure.
You control Tom Sawyer, and later his friends Huck Finn and Becky Thatcher, exploring the town of St. Petersburg and its surrounding areas screen by screen. Your main goal is to find the treasure hidden by the villainous Injun Joe. The game uses a turn-based combat system where you fight enemies like stray dogs and other troublemakers using a slingshot or other simple weapons. You also solve environmental puzzles, talk to townsfolk for clues, and delve into caves that serve as the game's dungeons. The pacing is deliberate, and some of the navigation can be tricky without a map. Playing it feels like a slow, methodical hunt through a simplified version of the novel's world.
