About Square Deal
Square Deal was a Game Boy release from 1990, developed by Atelier Double. It arrived during a period when the handheld was filling its library with a wide variety of puzzle and card games, offering a different kind of challenge from the platformers and adventures that often got more attention. This was a game you had to seek out if you were interested in something more methodical.
You play by managing a hand of cards, aiming to clear the board by matching pairs that add up to ten. The core loop involves drawing from a deck and strategically placing cards onto a grid, trying to create those valid combinations while the board slowly fills up. If you can't make a move, you draw another card, which increases the pressure as the game progresses. The difficulty comes from the limited space and the random order of the cards, forcing you to plan several steps ahead. It feels like a quiet, persistent test of your foresight and patience.
