About Spot (japan)
Spot came out for the Game Boy in 1990 from Virgin Games, a time when the handheld was full of simple, clever puzzle games. It was essentially a portable version of the board game Ataxx, but with a 7-Up theme that felt very much of its era, a corporate mascot game that was surprisingly solid underneath.
You control a green Spot piece on a grid, and your goal is to convert the entire board to your color. On your turn, you can either move one space to an adjacent empty square or jump two spaces away. When you land, all of the opponent's pieces in the eight surrounding squares flip to your side. The game starts slow, with just a few pieces on the board, but it quickly becomes a frantic battle for territory as the grid fills up. You have to think several moves ahead, blocking your opponent's expansion while carving out your own areas of control. The AI can be quite aggressive, making for a challenging and thoughtful experience. It feels like a tense, cerebral tug-of-war played out on a tiny screen.
