About Sports Collection (japan)
Sports Collection was a Japan only Game Boy release that came out in 1990, published by Nintendo. It was one of many early cartridges that bundled a few simple games together, a common approach for the platform's first couple of years. This particular collection focused on a trio of athletic events, offering a portable alternative to the sports titles found on home consoles.
You control an athlete across three different events: 100 meter hurdles, javelin throw, and triple jump. The main objective is to achieve the best possible score or time in each event, competing against the game's own benchmarks. For the hurdles, you tap the button in rhythm to build speed and then time your jumps to clear the obstacles without crashing. The javelin and triple jump require you to build momentum with a running start and then execute a well timed button press for the release or leap. The pacing is quick, with each event lasting only a few attempts, but the timing for the jumps and throws can be quite strict. It feels like a concentrated test of your button timing and rhythm on a small screen.
