I first played Speedy Gonzales on the Game Boy back in 1993. It was developed by Sunsoft, a company that put out a number of solid titles for the handheld. You control Speedy Gonzales through a series of side scrolling levels. Your main goal is to rescue your mouse friends from Sylvester the cat. The gameplay involves a lot of running and jumping across platforms, but your primary attack is a quick tail whip to fend off enemies. You also collect cheese wedges scattered everywhere, which act as both points and a form of health; getting hit makes you drop some. The levels are compact but require precise timing to navigate the enemy patterns and environmental hazards. It feels fast and a little frantic, especially when you are trying to outrun a screen closing in or a persistent enemy. Playing it gives you a sense of constant, cheerful momentum.
