About Spartan X (japan)
I first played Spartan X on the Game Boy back in 1984, a release from Irem. It was a time when portable games were just starting to find their footing, and this one felt like a solid attempt to bring a certain kind of action to the small screen. You don't see many games like it from that early period on the platform.
You control a martial artist, moving screen by screen through a series of locations. Your main goal is to rescue a kidnapped woman, which involves fighting through waves of enemies. The combat is straightforward; you punch and kick your way through opponents, and you can also pick up knives to throw. The levels are linear but require you to defeat all enemies in a room before you can proceed, which dictates the pace. It can be quite difficult, as enemies respawn if you leave a screen and then return. Playing it feels like a constant, methodical brawl where you are always counting your remaining health.
